Vintage Racers,

As the 2011 racing season draws to a close, we are very excited to begin planning the 2012 Vintage Grand Prix. We anticipate another outstanding event at Schenley Park as we celebrate our 30th anniversary!

MG will be the featured marque for 2012 and it is expected to draw a large number of participants in the marque race as well as a large representation on the show field. In addition, if participants wish to paddock together, we strongly encourage that they send the PVGP their space requirements. We are anticipating a large entry this year and paddock parking is expected to be very tight.

As Competition Director this year, I look forward to maintaining the tradition and uniqueness of the only city street road race in the country. I have been working in many capacities at the PVGP since its inception in 1983 and expect that the 2012 event will continue to provide all of the fun for participants and spectators that it has in the past. All of the PVGP team, including, Jim “Rocky” Farrar, Race Director, Mike Connolly, Assistant Race Director, Donna McDonough, Chief Registrar and all the other outstanding volunteers welcome and offer you the opportunity to enjoy and participate in the Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix, recognized worldwide as a premier vintage racing event, through the spectacular Schenley Park in Pittsburgh.

If you have a transponder, you will be timed. Rentals will be available but limited. It is recommended that participants have their own transponder. As has been the case over the past several years, we are continuing to expand the eligibility in each of the groups to accommodate more cars. Rest assured that we are not going to open up eligibility to those cars that do not fit the unique course that is Schenley Park. We will not compromise safety for the cars, drivers or the spectators. All participants at Schenley are strongly encouraged to take notice of the PVGP Driver Policy as excessive exuberance or unsafe driving will not be tolerated.

Please join us for the 30th running of the Grand Prix!

2012 Vintage Races at Schenley Park

The Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix Association was tremendously successful in 2011. The racing was exciting and incident free and a new record donation was made to our charities.
2012 will mark the 30th consecutive year of racing through the streets of Pittsburgh. Vintage drivers from all over the country, and the world, will race through the park while 200,000 spectators cheer them on! Racers paddock on Prospect Drive - a quarter mile long tree lined cul-de-sac that overlooks the start/finish line. Come be a part of our country's most unique vintage race and the last one run on city streets. 2012 Race Schedule

PVGP Mission
The Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix's mission remains the same as when it was established back in 1983 “To host a world-class vintage race event that celebrates our automotive heritage and raises money for charity.” In the original spirit of vintage racing that took place on public roads in the 1940's and 1950, our vintage races through the streets of Schenley Park will continue to present a safe and friendly environment for our drivers and fans.

Safety
The Pittsburgh Vintage Grand has been one of the leading vintage race organizations in the country when it comes to establishing driver and track safety for road courses. With the assistance of the Steel Cities Region of the SCCA we have set the standard, nationwide, for safety set-up and procedures. As a valuable member of the Vintage Motorsports Council the PVGP has consulted with numerous vintage race venues to help them establish safety regulations and procedures based on our 29 years of experience and expertise.

We will continue to uphold these standards for the safety of our racers, volunteers and fans. The races at Schenley Park constitute the most challenging circuit in vintage racing. With stone walls, curbs, phone poles and 23 off camber turns - there is little room for error. New drivers will be required to attend a special meeting to review the track and its unique requirements.

Charity
The Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix benefits the Autism Society of Pittsburgh and Allegheny Valley School. This October the PVGP donated $200,000 to these two fine charities, bringing the 29 year total to $2.95 million. These funds directly help individuals in western Pennsylvania affected by autism and mental retardation. The PVGP is truly a race where everybody wins! Read more on our Charities.

Dual Registration & Fees
A new single registration system will accept single entries for both race weekends and allow for discounts for participants of both events. Accommodations will be made to store cars for free during the week between races if you are participating at both events.
With a week of events scheduled between race weekends the Grand Prix is hoping that participants will choose to stay in town the whole 10 days.  The field at Schenley Park will be limited to 200 cars.

Sanctioning
PVGPA will  sanction the Schenley Park races again in 2012. To race you must be a current member of a vintage racing organization in order to participate. We are grateful to the Vintage Sports Car Club of America (VSCCA) and their members who helped establish our race and have supported it for three decades. Our new race groups include all VSCCA cars that have competed at Schenley Park in the past.

Car Preparation and Medical
Applicants must have a competition license and be a member in good standing with a race organization. Cars that qualify within our 2012 Race Groups will be scrutineered by the PVGPA based upon the vehicle preparation and safety equipment rules of their respective vintage race organizations. There will be a few local rules, the most important restriction that applies for all racers is that slick tires are not permitted.
The PVGP will accept your vintage race organization’s medical credentials. It is now required that drivers have passed a physical within the last two years, or within one year if over the age of 60. If you need a medical form click here to download a PDF of the VMC Medical Form.
